A Knights Quest – Awesome Zelda-style platformer?

For those of you have followed my website or YouTube channel, you know I am a huge Zelda fan. I am also a fan of the idea of a Zelda-like adventure. Unfortunately many of these Zelda-style games have been absolute garbage. To be fair some have been good (Oceanhorn, Mulaka, Blossom Tales, Okami and a handful of others), many have not. So the question is, where does A Knights Quest fall? Is it a brilliant Zelda-style platformer or an epic disaster? Read on to find out as I break down A Knights Quest.

Graphics – 8/10

Although the world is not as detailed as Breath of the Wild, it is still, at times, stunning. With beautiful vistas, great effects and a charming cartoon style, you play in an open world, and each area feels pretty huge. The boss characters look great and are well animated. I mostly played this game in handheld mode, but I did connect it to the dock and it looked great on the big screen as well. A huge plus in the graphics department was the way our main hero, Rusty, was animated. You could see on his face how he was feeling, and his running animations were purposefully hilarious. Although not the best looking game on the Switch (I save that honor for Zelda BOTW and Mario Odyssey), it’s still a great looking game in its own right.

Audio – 8/10

WEEEE!

Depending on our tastes, you will either love or hate the voice acting. It was all done wordlessly. Reminds me a lot of the old classic RPG Golden Sun. The weapon sounds were fine and bosses sounded good. My favorite part of the audio was honestly the music. At times it was calming and soothing, at other times more frantic. It always seemed to fit. Reminded me a lot of some of my favorite Zelda toons.

Gameplay – 9/10

A Knights Quest controlled very well. I had no issues with the camera, which followed along quite well. When battling enemies, there didn’t seem to be any lag at all. The combat felt really fun, especially once you unlocked the Fire, Ice and Time effects. You could use the effects in battle or for the many puzzle sections.

Speaking of puzzles, they were head scratching at times, but they always seemed fair. I fell to my death a couple of times due to ill timed jumps, but I never felt that it was a flaw in the game. Once I figured out a puzzle, I felt accomplished.

Story – 8/10

You are Rusty. You have set about the end of the world, and you must fix it. There are a lot of games that claim to be funny and they are not. Often times their humor falls flat. I genuinely found this game to be humorous, often laughing out loud at a goofy story element or dialogue. Rusty was not looking to be a hero, he became one to undo the mess he made. I won’t talk too much about the plot itself to avoid spoilers, but we will just say it was a really fun ride.

Overall – 8.5/10

Please don’t fall!

I highly recommend picking up A Knights Quest. If you have already beaten BOTW and Links Awakening and are looking for your next Zelda fix, check out A Knights Quest. Not only is it a great game in its own right its also only 24.99. 24.99 for a full fun adventure such as this is a steal. Go on, buy it.
