I remember when the first Kingdom Hearts was announced, I believe it was E3 2001, (I know the game actually came out in 2002 for the PS2). I thought to myself, has square lost their minds? I mean I love Disney, always have and I love Square and the Final Fantasy series, but combining both. This is going to be one of those lame cash ins. I even heard rumor that Disney was going to buy Square. Then they showed that the main weapon was going to be a Keyblade, really? A keyblade, so what they can open really big doors now? Surely this is the decline of the mighty square brand. As the game got closer to release and I saw more gameplay and cinematics, my doubts turned to curiosity then excitement. Like most people I don’t like to admit when I am wrong. This time however I was thrilled to be wrong. The game wound up being brilliant. I loved running around with Goofy and Donald, exploring Alice’s wonderland, trying to escape the belly of a whale. Visiting Halloween town, there were so many great characters I got to meet and adventure with. There were also a ton of Final Fantasy characters from Cloud(FF7) to Squall(FF8). The amount of fanfare and care the developers took in crafting this game was astounding. It wasn’t just the characters that made the game and series phenomenal, the story was deep and extremely well written. It starts off with a quick battle to get used to controls and then you quickly wind up at Destiny Island, where we meet our main hero and his friends. I remember getting lost in the beauty of Destiny Island. I truly felt like a kid again, I got to experience the main character Sora’s childhood right before he had to quickly grow up. The three main characters were Sora, Riku(his best friend) and Kairi mutual friend and perhaps more. There is no way I can even go over the first game and touch on everything without giving too many spoilers, yes its an older game but if you haven’t experienced it, then you need to. You can pick up Kingdom hearts HD:Remix for PS3 and get the original final mix version(previously only released in Japan). You also get RE:Chain of memories as a bonus. There is also Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix which is on PS3 and has KH2 in HD, as well as the sadly under the radar Birth by sleep. Both are worth picking up if you have a PS3.
Four years later they gave us Kingdom Hearts 2, It was just as brilliant. There were I believe eight different Kingdom Hearts, not including the remakes on ps3. They were Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts Coded, Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded and Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance. I believe I covered them all, If I missed anything let me know in the comments below. There is going to be a Kingdom hearts 3 and Big Hero 6 as well as Tangled will be in this KH3. I cant wait, unfortunately there is no release date announced as of this writing. I will let you know as soon as there is a press release.
There is some good news though, especially for those who have not played the very underrated Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance. There is a remake coming for the PS4, and it looks amazing. It’s titled Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Mix Prologue, I think I will just call it KH 2.8. The official release date is December 2016, so still a little ways out, I have no doubt worth the wait. Even though the idea of playing Dream Drop in HD makes me very happy, what too me is more exciting is the new playable episode Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary passage that helps link the series to KH3. Here are a couple of videos to help pass the time while you wait for more KH goodness, the remaining article after the video is take from the Square Enix press release.
